The new NBA basketball

Regardless of your position on the physical properties of the new NBA ball, can we all at least agree the damn thing looks ridiculous? How can you mess with the seams on a baskeball? They're classic. MLB wouldn't dare mess with the stitches on a baseball. Would you rather play with a ball that looks like thisor this
Why don't they just switch to this while they're at it?

The Barbers

Over the weekend, Ronde Barber intercepted 2 Donovan McNabb passes and returned them both for touchdowns. This gives Ronde 2 more touchdowns than his retiring brother Tiki. You know, the one who's job it is to score.

Also, the Buccaneer's website is the most annoying site of a professional sports team I've ever visited. So annoying, in fact, I refuse to link to it.

Twins pick up $12 Millon Hunter option

The Twins picked up Torii's 1 year, $12 Million option for the 2007 season. The only question is:
Are the Twins getting or?

Buck O'Neil 1911-2006

When I woke up this morning, I turned on the TV to catch some highlights from the Tigers game while I ate breakfast. Instead, I was greated with the news that Buck O'Neil had died. I turned to my roommate, but the he only thing that could come out of my mouth was "Dude, this sucks." I really had no words to describe how saddened I was to hear that Buck had died. Meeting Buck O'Neil is the highlight of my baseball life. The text of my recap of meeting Buck follows.

Yesterday, I had the extreme privilege of meeting Buck O'Neil. For those of you who don't know, Buck was a Negro League's player for the Kansas City Monarchs, among others, and the first black coach in the Major Leagues when he coached for the Cubs. He's been on the Veteran's Committee of the Hall of Fame since about 1981 and runs the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City. Not only that, he's a great person. When he entered the museum (I was at the Bob Feller Museum, more on him later), I didn't realize who he was. I saw him across the room. He started hugging the ladies behind the desk, being generally jovial. He radiated a happiness that was contagious. Everyone in the museum was full of energy, and it was 8 in the morning. He was shaking hands and talking to everyone. He made you feel like he came to see you, and I genuinely think that he did. I'm pretty sure Buck had as much fun meeting me as I did him. I was really near the beginning of the line to get his autograph, but he had a magnetic personality that made me hang around. I could have left and come back to sleep some more, but Buck made me not want to leave. Everyone was having a great time. Stories flew, people laughed, Buck told a joke. He was happy to tell anyone a story. It was just all around great. Any other time, meeting Bob Feller would have been at the top of my list, but Buck was today, and Bob understood that. Bob just kinda laid low. I got to talk to him as well. Bob was a great guy as well. He too had a genuine want to talk to everyone there. Judging by some of the other people there, he was a regular, greeting a lot of people by their first names. Yesterday was so much fun, and I'm very grateful to have gotten to meet two legends of the game.

Just One More Thing - Game 2

I feel rather underqualified to comment on lineup choices this season. I got to see approximately 2 weeks worth of games all year, and those games were all in the Batista-Castro-Lohse Era. So can someone please explain why Tyner, who is one of the best outfielders on the team, batted as the DH and the 34-year-old Rondell White is in leftfield? It would seem to me that let the guy who can field field and let the old guy hang out on the bench till it's his turn to hit. But that's just me, I'm not Gardy.

ALCS Game 2

The Good

The Bad
The Ugly

Game 2

Bottom 8th:

Why, when you're down by 2, are the Twins swinging at first pitches? You've got to be patient and get a quality at-bat out of the apperance. Throw in Torii swinging at anything coming within 55' of the plate, that was a pretty shoddy performance

Jason David is bad for your heart

I assume you've seen the end of today's Colts-Jets game. I didn't see the end of the game when it happened because I was at work, so all I knew was that the Colts won. I was watching SportsCenter earlier and they showed the highlights. I just about shit myself when Jason David finally got the ball away from the Jets and then proceeded to try to run with it. I yelled "WHAT THE HELL! JUST FALL!" quite loudly. He scared the bejeezus out of me, even though I already knew the outcome.

Other Colts Notes

  • I'm not sure if Martin Gramatica deserves a cookie or an ass-kicking. On the one hand, he totally screwed in knocking Ryan LaCasse off of the Jets returner, springing him for a touchdown.
  • On the other hand, that let the Jets score quickly, giving Peyton plenty of time to get the lead back. If the Jets have a time consuming drive and score, it's harder for the Colts to come back.
  • Petyon has 2 rushing touchdowns in the last two weeks, uping his career total to 11. He has one more than rookie Joseph Addai. Peytons yds/td ratio is 3/2.
  • Top rushing performances this year: Addai -84, Addai - 82, Rhodes - 75
  • Lawrence Malroney: 125 yards on 15 carries, 2 TD. I'll now go hang myself.
